Whatever your feelings on reboots, sequels and prequels, the trend for dusting off our favourite films and TV shows and giving them a 21st-century sheen is not abating any time soon.

And this week, following the first look at stills from the upcoming Dirty Dancing TV remake, a trailer has dropped for the musical special – and, fans may be pleased to know, it comes complete with lift.

Appearing on people.com, the clip – which you can watch in full below – ticks nearly all the boxes from the iconic Eighties film, with shimmying on logs, lake scenes and, yep, that amazing lift (you know, the one we’ve all tried to recreate at some point in our lives through the power of gin). Though sadly, we have yet to spy a watermelon.

The three-hour show features the skills of choreographer of Hamilton, Andy Blankenbuehler, and stars Little Miss Sunshine star Abigail Breslin as Baby Houseman and Colt Prattes as Johnny Castle, as well as Nicole Scherzinger, Sarah Hyland and Debra Messing.

Appearing on US network ABC, the revival will not be an exact remake, but goes beyond the 1987 original, which famously starred Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze.

Messing, who plays Baby’s mother Marjorie, recently told People: “This isn't a replica of the original. This takes some liberties.

“It has the DNA of the original, but you are going to find out what happened to Baby and Johnny after that summer ended […]

“My hope is that people who loved the movie are going to be happy with all the things that are iconic with the movie, that they'll appreciate the things that are new and modernised with this version.”

The new musical will feature updated versions of the songs that littered the original, including Time of My Life, Do You Love Me and, of course, Hungry Eyes.

And Messing added that her own role was made bigger so they could explore Baby’s parents’ relationship: “It wasn’t much of a role the first time around. That was really exciting to me, being able to explore her and explore their marriage in the dynamics […] that was very satisfying to me.”

Meanwhile, Grey revealed last summer that she’d turned down a cameo role in the remake, but would be tuning in regardless.

“I was flattered because I always want to be asked,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “But […] it didn't feel appropriate to me.”

She added: “I am always interested in any iteration of something where they feel there's more to be gotten and I would love to see what it is that they come up with […]

“I think they've got wonderful actors in it. I'm going to be watching it and I'm excited.”

Dirty Dancing will air 24 May on ABC.
