Head’s up, dear reader: this article contains spoilers for the second series of BBC One’s Doctor Foster.
Doctor Gemma Foster (Suranne Jones) might be plotting revenge, but, in amongst all of her scheming, she’s managed to squeeze in some quality time with her new beau, James (Prasanna Puwanarajah).
But, while some fans were bowled over by the teacher bringing his vengeful lover breakfast, others were concerned that James is actually one of her ex-husband’s spies.
Initially one of Gemma’s patients – and also the teacher of her 15-year-old son, Tom – there are a lot of reasons to suspect that there’s more to James than meets the eye.
Puwanarajah, however, has done his best to assure viewers that his mysterious character’s intentions are entirely honourable – and that James actually has forged a genuine connection with Gemma.
“James is attracted to Gemma and they have a connection,” Prasanna told Digital Spy. “After their first date [gatecrashing Simon's wedding party], there is an honesty in that which is appealing and genuine.
“She's not trying to hide what's going on in her life, she's like – this is my life, take it or leave it. So James is thinking, I've met this person in an unexpected way that was weird, but he is attracted to that, and her honesty.
“From his point of view there are clearly obstacles – [but] everyone has obstacles...”
Of course, it’s worth remembering that Puwanarajah will have been asked to throw viewers off the scent when it comes to spoilers.
In episode two of the second season, we saw an exhausted James thank Gemma for giving him “the best sex I’ve ever had”.
Gemma, though, seemed unenthused.
“Yeah, it was good,” she replied flatly.
Plus let’s not forget that she told him all about a recent squeeze who she paid in order to ward off intimacy. You know, the one who stopped doing it after the second go because he felt “insulted”.
It goes without saying that this really isn’t the sort of thing anyone wants to hear from a prospective new lover – and, when you consider the fact that James has also overlooked Gemma’s stalking, heavy drinking, and outright outrageous behaviour, it’s left many wondering exactly what it is he sees in the GP.
Maybe he’s feeding information to Simon, as some have suggested. Maybe he has a thing for danger. Or maybe, just maybe, he’s the sort of guy that’s willing to give his date a very large helping of the benefit of the doubt.
We guess all will be revealed as the series progresses.
Doctor Foster continues next Tuesday at 9pm on BBC One.
