This is how much sex you need to be happy, according to science

At first glance, the statistics surrounding us Brits and our sex lives make for pretty depressing reading.

While a 2014 study found we were having less sex than ever before, a 2015 study found that the few times we were having sex might not even have been that good, with less than half of UK adults claiming they were satisfied with their sex lives

But finally, science has offered us some good news about our sex lives: according to a new study, having sex just once a week is enough to boost our happiness and wellbeing.

The study, which examined the sex lives of some 30,645 participants, including both single people and those in a relationship, found that having sex once a week was associated with enjoying a greater sense of well-being.

Conversely, having sex more than once a week had no additional effect on wellbeing for those who are in a relationship.

Brilliantly titled Sexual Frequency Predicts Greater WellBeing, But More Is Not Always Better, the study was conducted at The University of Toronto and published earlier this month in the Social Psychological and Personality Science journal.

Writing at the end of the study, which tested participants across three separate studies, the authors concluded, "The media emphasises - and research supports - the claim that the more sex you have, the happier you will feel. 

"We demonstrate that the association between sexual frequency and well-being is best described by a curvilinear (as opposed to a linear) association where sex is no longer associated with wellbeing at a frequency of more than once a week."
