When Elle Woods first hit our screens in 2001, she defied the ultimate stereotype: that femininity, womanhood and the colour pink are not mutually exclusive with intelligence, ambition and determination.

She graduated from Harvard Law School, moved on from the partner who didn't respect her and didn't let any measure of sexism deter her from her goals, all the while providing support and compassion to her fellow women.

Now, with Hillary Clinton taking her seat in the race to become president and 12 years since the sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, Reese Witherspoon thinks it's time Woods made a comeback.

“A lot of writers over the years have come up with different ideas for it,” the actress, 39, says in an interview on talk show Fashionably Late with Rachel Zoe.

“I actually think it’s kind of great right now because we’re talking about women in politics and how important that is to get more women. And I think it’d be kind of a cool thing to have her be a Supreme Court justice or someone who runs for office...President! I mean.”

While a third film is yet to be given the green light - “Call MGM, I have no idea!” Witherspoon says - she believes it's time the world had a bit more Elle in their life.

“I think we’re ready to see Elle and see what she’s up to lately,” she said.

The character of Elle Woods last appeared in 2003's Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde where she travels to Washington D.C. to pass a bill to ban animal testing.

She was then re-imagined for the stage in 2007 and Legally Blonde The Musical has since shown in Broadway, the West End and multiple tours in the UK and America.
