To anyone who ever scoffed at the idea of women playing football, the England team has got a gloriously smug new title under its belt.

Ticket sales for the at home game in November, in which England will play Germany at Wembley have shown overwhelming support for the Lionesses, with the Football Association announcing that already over 50,000 have been sold.

The previous at home ticket sale record stood at 45,619, from back in 2014 when Germany beat England. But with the game still months away, this influx of ticket sales looks very promising.

Speaking to talkSPORT host Jim White live from Wembley yesterday (31 July), the head of women’s football in England, Baroness Sue Campbell, reiterated what an achievement this is for the women: “We want this event at Wembley to be a real celebration of what the Lionesses have achieved and who they are.

“50,000 is terrific, it’s a step in the right direction and it will be a record if everyone who has bought a ticket shows, and we hope they will.

“We’d love to fill this stadium and what a homecoming that would be for the Lionesses.”
