Chilling Adventures of Sabrina fans, the Christmas special trailer is here and it looks dark

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter’s Tale traiker is here - and as predicted, it’s all kicking off in Greendale.

Snuggling up to watch Christmas TV specials are what December is all about. In fact, we’ve already planned our festive viewing schedule.

Well, we thought we had, until today, when the trailer for new The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter’s Tale dropped and rose quickly to the top of our must-watch list.

If you thought Christmas TV was all about snow-covered shots of Downton Abbey and Ross dressing up as a holiday armadillo, you’ve been sorely mistaken. In fact, we reckon some of the best seasonal tales come with a serving of devilishness, just look at the magic of Nightmare Before Christmas for example.

And if there’s anything that the rebooted Sabrina has claimed in contrast to its predecessor, it’s being dark - seriously dark (so much so that the old Sabrina the Teenage Witch were pretty shocked when watching the new version). And it absolutely hasn’t twee-ed up for Christmas.

The one-minute advert starts with the same tongue-in-cheek feel that ran throughout the entire first series, blaring the “jing jing jingling” of Sleigh Ride by The Ronettes over very creepy scenes of old-fashioned children’s dolls that slowly come to life… and they don’t look friendly.

Sabrina, with her hair looking brighter and whiter than ever after her transformation in the last episode post-book signing, is still attending the  Academy of the Unseen Arts full-time. She greets her fellow students and nemesis’, The Weird Sisters, a bright Winter Solstice, which is The Church of Night’s version of Christmas based on the longest night of the year.

For a little bit of background, Winter Solstice is when magical families gather around the Yule Fire (ideally the home’s hearth that’s been lit with a yule log) to sing pagan carols and tell ghost stories. But the holidays are also a time for guests - both welcome and unwelcome - which means there’s just as much chance that the Spellman’s will receive a visit from someone, or something, ghoulish.

And sure enough, it looks like Sabrina, her family and her friends will be introduced to some less than seasonal specters this Christmas.

Having only just found out that their best friend is a witch, Roz and Susie are being well and truly thrown in at the deep end, seeing what “Christmas is like as a witch.” From a kidnapping Santa Claus, a mysterious ghost and a very angry-looking demon, the Baxter High gang look to be very much in the clutches of the Dark Lord.

Those rooting for Sabrina and Harvey (who broke up last season) will be excited to know that the pair seem to be rekindling their flame, as the trailer shows a clip of them exchanging Christmas gifts and looking as in love as ever.

But we very much doubt it’ll be a romantic holiday for our girl, who at the end of the clip finds herself standing the forest watching a newborn being offered to the devil himself. We did say it was going to be dark.
