Since 2012, rumours have been flying around the internet about the fate of independent film Serena, a Depression-era love story starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper.
Originally, Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky had optioned to direct it with plans to cast Angelina Jolie as the lead character, but it ended up in the hands of Oscar-winning Danish director Susanne Bier who insisted on using Lawrence and Cooper. Shot in the Czech Republic in March 2012 after the pair wrapped the Oscar-winning Silver Linings Playbook, the film’s subsequent delay led to industry speculation that the film might never be released.
Thankfully for Lawrence-Cooper fans, a release date has now been set – the film will hit cinemas in the UK in late October.
Based on the 2008 bestselling novel of the same name by Ron Rash, Serena is set in Twenties North Carolina and follows the lives of newlywed couple George and Serena Pemberton.
Lawrence stars as the titular role (seen belowin an exclusive image from the film), a natural-born leader who hunts rattlesnakes and even saves her husband’s life while out in the wilderness, while Cooper plays George, an ambitious timber magnate intent on building an empire.

Although the couple appear to have everything, when Serena discovers she is unable to conceive, the film follows her descent into madness as she takes out her disappointment of never being able to have a child on her husband’s illegitimate son.
A dark drama, Serena is miles away from the oddball pairing of Lawrence and Cooper in David O Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook (which earned Lawrence a Best Actress academy award) and the subsequent casting of the pair in Seventies comedy-thriller American Hustle, which received a phenomenal 10 Oscar nominations.
If the pair’s past success is any measure, we anticipate Serena might just be on track for its own haul of Oscars. You heard it here first.
Serena is in cinemas nationwide from 24 October
