Opening a social media app for a scroll down our feeds has almost become a nervous tic for most of us. And while doing so, we’re all guilty of mindlessly hitting ‘like’ on a post – more often because we think we should than because they’ve struck a chord with us. Especially if a friend announces an engagement or pregnancy – obviously it would be rude to ignore such happy news.
But to prove how little attention we really invest in the things we ‘like’ online, a comedian from the US has trolled his Facebook friends with a series of “engagement” posts.
First Zach Lamplugh posted a photo styled after typical proposal selfies, featuring himself and a woman called Somaly. It quickly racked up hundreds of likes and comments congratulating them.
Fair enough, seems similar to many and genuine enough, right?
But spurred on by the “overwhelming support”, he then posted another engagement photo of himself and a woman called Sopheak, while Somaly can be seen looking devastated in the background.
While the first post was captioned, “We finally made it official!” the next spelled out the ruse: “Wow! I couldn't believe the overwhelming support I received online for getting engaged! So many of you liked my post that I went ahead and got engaged a second time! Thank you everyone for all your encouragement!”
The third post introduces Stephanie, who poses wearing the same ring, while Somaly appears even more distraught in the background.
"Wow everyone! Thanks to your love and support online I was able to get engaged for a third time! So excited for our future together!!!" Lamplugh wrote.
And the likes and comments continued to roll in, with Lamplugh thanking everyone for their digital congratulations: “Thank you for all the encouragement online and we appreciate all the likes and shares that you've offered up to support our new life together!”
In total, Lamplugh put out nine “engagement” posts, and while the likes decreased a little with each additional picture (and clearly many of his friends realised the joke), the string of photographs nevertheless effectively skewers how we don’t engage as much with what’s on our feeds as our ‘likes’ suggest – especially, as he points out, we might sometimes be guilty of using a digital thumbs up in place of actual support and interaction.
