Fantastic Mr Fox

Published

A series of stunning photos capture the exact moment a red fox leaps masterfully into the air before pouncing on his prey in America's Yellowstone National Park.

The sequence shows in astounding detail how the fox carefully prowls the surface for several minutes, listening out for the sound of mice.

He then catapults into the air before nose-diving into the deep snow, with only his back legs and bushy tail visible as he lands his dinner.

Wildlife photographer Richard Peters snapped the action-packed moments while travelling through the Lamar Valley area of Yellowstone National Park.

"After a good twenty minutes the fox leapt into the air and dived into the snow twice to catch a meal," he said. "It was so quick I barely had time to frame the fox in the viewfinder before it leaped into the air and came diving down, burying itself in the snow right up to its hind legs."

See the drama unfold in the series of photos, above.
