Once open, the slide will cost around £5 per go, and the descent is expected to last approximately 40 seconds.

Anish Kapoor, who designed the original orbit for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, has given the slide his full blessing. Fitting in with the designers original "light to dark" vision, the slide will have some transparent windows to offer visitors spectacular views across East London before plunging them into darkness once again.

Director of visitor service to the Olympic Park, Peter Tudor, told the Evening Standard, "The slide starts in darkness [on the platform] and then you get outside and it's in blazing light."

"One of the reasons it's called the Orbit is you orbit it. This is another way to do that."
