Fans are given a slither of hope that Frozen’s Elsa could have a girlfriend.
Frozen fever hit the world back in 2013. And though we may have stopped singing Do You Want To Build A Snow Man quite so frequently, we are more than ready for the sequel and the release of the new teaser trailer for Frozen 2 has only increased our excitement for winter 2019.
Thousands of people have already flocked to social media to speculate about Frozen 2, with one main topic of conversation.
Thanks to the film’s stand-out and ridiculously popular song Let It Go, many speculated the main-protagonist and everyone’s favourite ice queen, Elsa, is a gay woman.
With lyrics that include: “Couldn’t keep it in, heaven knows I’ve tried” and “Conceal, don’t feel, don’t let them know, well, now they know,” the Oscar-winning song has been interpreted and used as a ‘coming out anthem’.
This has sparked many passionate online discussions from fans of the film who hope that Disney will finally include an LGBTQ+ character in Frozen’s sequel. And the creators have been listening.
So, will Elsa have a girlfriend in Frozen 2?
Frozen co-director and writer Jennifer Lee has responded to the online petitions and #GiveElsaAGirlfriend hashtags during an interview with Huffington Post saying: “Where we’re going with it, we have tons of conversations about it, and we’re really conscientious about these things.”
Lee then went on to add: “Elsa’s every day telling me where she needs to go, and she’ll continue to tell us. I always write from character-out, and where Elsa is and what Elsa’s doing in her life, she’s telling me every day. We’ll see where we go.”
Obviously, this isn’t a resounding yes to the idea of Elsa having a special woman in her life, but considering the flack the film company has been receiving due to a lack of LGBTQ+ representation, we’re hopeful.
In a study conducted by The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation in 2016, film production companies were ranked based on their inclusiveness of LGBTQ+ characters. Disney, along with Warner Brothers and Paramount Pictures, “failed” as they released zero films with LGBTQ+ characters in 2015.
Since then, 2017’s Beauty and The Beast featured a scene showing LeFou dancing with another man which was described as an “exclusively gay moment” by the film’s director, Bill Condon. However, when the film opened, the scene didn’t meet expectations.
So, will we finally see the homosexual representation we expect in 2019? We’ll have to wait and see….
