Emilia Clarke, who plays ‘Mother of Dragons’ Daenerys Targaryen in popular medieval fantasy epic television show, Game of Thrones, says she hates doing sex scenes.

Speaking to the Daily MailClarke, 28, says:

“I don’t want to have sex thrown in my face and I’ve always thought the suggestion is so much more titillating than the act itself.”

She went on to say that the majority of sex scenes are “gratuitous”, and not necessary, saying:

“Most sex scenes you see in films or on TV are gratuitous and they’re usually just to attract an audience. On screen, the subtler the better.”

“I’m British, so I cringe at that sort of thing anyway. I can’t stand it,” she says.

Whilst playing the role, the actor has appeared on screen nude numerous times, but is believed to have told the show's directors two years ago that she would no longer do topless scenes.

Clarke’s co-star, Oona Chaplin, told the Telegraph: “One of the girls in the show who got her kit off the most in the first couple of seasons now doesn’t at all because she said, ‘I want to be known for my acting not for my breasts.’”

Game of Thrones is known for its no-holds-barred approach to sex, so Clarke’s comments are certainly controversial considering her role in the show. Clarke also turned down the role of Anastatia Steele in Sam Taylor-Johnson’s 50 Shades of Grey adaptation, due to the high levels of nudity, saying:

"I really wanted to work with Sam Taylor-Johnson because she's f**king amazing, but there is a huge amount of nudity in the film."
