On the Basis of Sex is an uplifting, inspiring film about one woman who paved the way for all of us…

“Discrimination on the basis of sex is legal. Let’s right this wrong…”

A quote from Ruth Bader Ginsburg that’s as relevant now as it was when she said it in the Seventies.

It’s one of many brilliantly powerful statements from the trailblazing Bader Ginsburg played by Felicity Jones in On the Basis of Sex.

The film is a spirited tale about the early life of one of America’s most important women who faced discrimination repeatedly, yet never stopped battling.

For those unfamiliar with Bader Ginsburg, she was one of the few female Harvard law students in the Fifties.

Unable to find a job despite her high grades, she became a uni professor and founded the ACLU’s Women’s Rights Project.

Frustrated about the career opportunities denied her simply because of her sex, Bader Ginsburg soon became a vocal advocate for equality.

The 1972 court case that made her name – strikingly dramatised here – saw her defend not a woman, but a man who was discriminated against due to his gender.

Argued alongside her solicitor husband Marty (Armie Hammer), the case challenged the US constitution’s laws that discriminated ‘on the basis of sex’, paving the way for more laws to be changed.

Helmed by legendary director Mimi Leder, the film’s written by Bader Ginsburg’s nephew Daniel Stiepleman, and unfolds as both an emotional love story and gripping legal drama.

Jones, brilliant as ever, inhabits the role completely, crafting a vivid, passionate portrayal of a woman learning how to use her voice.

But it’s her staunch determination to fight for what’s right that proves so moving in a timely, inspiring and essential movie.
