For many of us growing up, the idea of getting paid for appearing on TV and presenting actual television programmes was a job of unparalled glamour. And one that only a lucky few would ever achieve. But Maya Jama has done exactly that, leaving home in Bristol at 16 to chase her career ambitions in London. Now aged 23, she is presenting primetime shows on ITV, while appearing regularly on 4Music and RinseFM. As part of our Envy Sessions with Nissan Juke Envy, Stylist talks to Maya about the life mantras that have got her to the top.
“When I wake up not feeling great, I list all the things I’m grateful for; so I’ll say to myself, I have a house, I have warmth, I have a job, people who love me, a good relationship. And then things always seem a little better. It’s a good way to start your day.”
Graft equals success
“At the beginning of any job that’s tough to get into, you’re going to have to work really hard. And it always looks a lot easier than it is from the outside. People don’t see the early mornings and the long hours, the lack of sleep or missing
nights out. They just see the final product. Be aware you’re not going to get everything straight away. And be prepared to graft, because it will be worth it in the end.”
Make envy your motivation
“If you look at someone and feel envious of aspects of their life, then work super hard for it and you can have it, too. In this day and age, nothing is out of reach if you put your whole heart into it. Be inspired and work for it.”
Everything will be ok in the end
“This is about telling yourself that everything might feel bad at this moment but in a couple of weeks’ time, or for however long, it will be better. When I kept going to screen tests and not getting any jobs, I was worried I’d have to
go back to work in retail and give up on my dream. I was broke, and couldn’t pay rent. It was like, my life is over. And then I got a job.”
