Kay explains that as an identity, the ‘girl’s girl’ is an almost impossible one to get right, as it’s so mired in contradiction. “Women and girls are constantly under a set of highly conflicting pressures to be simultaneously perfect and vulnerable, aspirational and relatable. It’s an impossible balance to achieve,” she says. “For example, the archetypes of girl’s girls tend to be heterosexual and, conventionally, very attractive, and yet not interested in male attention.”

Being a girl’s girl is viewed as aspirational – perhaps the ultimate badge of honour for women who want to connect with other women – and yet it’s littered with problematic assumptions. While sisterhood is a powerful force for good, basing this connection on dating behaviour or the ability to adhere to strict gender stereotypes doesn’t seem right. After all, how often do you hear men described as ‘boy’s boys’? We know that narrow, prescriptive labels for women are almost always used against us. And if you strip away the friendly facade, it’s hard to see how ‘girl’s girl’ is any different.

Is being a ‘girl’s girl’ just another impossible standard to measure ourselves against?
