The nominations for the Golden Globes 2017 have been released – and while 2016 might have been a dud year in almost every other respect, we can say with hand on heart that it’s been a vintage year for brilliant movies and TV.
Natalie Portman, Ruth Negga and Emma Stone are among those nominated in the Best Actress categories, for their roles in Jackie, Loving and La La Land respectively. La La Land, Damien Chazelle’s sparklingly modern yet defiantly old-school Hollywood musical, is leading the pack for overall nominations in the cinema categories. Released in UK cinemas in January 2016, the Ryan Gosling/Emma Stone double-hander has scooped a whopping seven nominations – including Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Best Actress and Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for Stone and Gosling respectively.
Also sweeping the board is the gritty but ethereal Moonlight, which has scooped five nominations including Best Motion Picture (Drama) and Best Supporting Actress (for British actress Naomie Harris). The Miami-set movie, which tells the story of a bullied child taken in by a crack dealer, has received glowing reviews since its premiere at film festivals in September.
Michelle Williams’ latest film, Manchester by the Sea, has four nods, as do British-Australian drama Lion and comedy biopic Florence Foster Jenkins. Meryl Streep’s nomination for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy (for her role as the titular amateur soprano in Florence Foster Jenkins) is a historic one: it’s the 30th time she’s been pegged for a Golden Globe, making her the most nominated star in the show's history.
While television was once widely perceived as a sort of training ground for actors before they made it big in Hollywood, in 2016 some of the best roles – and biggest stars – could be found on the small screen. The nominations in the television categories reflect the calibre of this year’s new TV, with The Crown, Stranger Things and Westworld among the shows nominated for Best Television Series (Drama).
