Women shave heads for friend with breast cancer

Published

A group of women have shaved their heads in support of their friend who has breast cancer.

A moving video by South African photographer Albert Bredenhann tells the story of how the women secretly shaved their hair off before surprising their friend, Gerdi McKenna, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.

Bredenhann had originally been hired to take a simple "friendship shoot" with the group, but beforehand he contacted all McKenna's friends to ask if they would also sacrifice their hair in a show of solidarity.

Almost all of the women did, and surprised McKenna with the heartwarming gesture at the shoot last month.

“I learned one thing this morning and that is that hair is but a small part of you, and your biggest gift is that you are healthy,” said one of the woman after the shoot.

‘If I only think what Gerdi is going through, then this is nothing,’ another added.

“You girls look awesome!” a shocked and emotional McKenna is heard telling her friends in the video, which is set to Meatloaf's I'd Do Anything For Love.

The women's hair was donated to the Cancer Association of South Africa to be made into wigs for other cancer patients.
