Well, f**k us gently with a chainsaw: Heathers is coming to the West End.
The iconic 1989 film was made into a musical in 2017, opening at Westminster studio The Other Palace last month after a limited run.
The show stars Carrie Hope Fletcher as protagonist Veronica Sawyer, Jamie Muscato as Jason Dean and Jodie Steele, Sophie Isaacs and T’Shan Williams as the three Heathers. It’s written by Laurence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy, who have experience adapting films to musical – they’ve also worked on the Desperate Housewives and Legally Blonde musicals.
The original film starred Winona Ryder as Veronica – part of a popular girls’ clique at her high school, but disillusioned with their behaviour. Things change when her new boyfriend. J.D. – played by a young and very hunky Christian Slater – turn up; they accidentally poison group ringleader, Heather Chandler and make it seem like a suicide.
Veronica later realises JD is killing other members of the school and has to stop him – as well as grappling with the tricky politics of high school cliqueyness.
Drama, romance and murder: sounds like it’s got all the makings of a perfect musical.
