The TV reboot of Heathers has been dropped indefinitely by Paramount Network.

The re-imagining of the Eighties cult classic film, Heathers for TV has been scrapped in the wake of multiple school shootings across America.

The high school-inspired comedy was due to air on Paramount Network (formerly Spike TV) in March, but the date was pushed back after the Parkland shooting in February which left 17 dead. Now, the network has made the “difficult” decision to drop it indefinitely after the Santa Fe High School shooting last month.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the president of the network’s development and production, Keith Cox, explained why they’ve cancelled the series in the current climate.

“This is a high school show, we’re blowing up the school, there are guns in the school, it’s a satire and there are moments of teachers having guns,” Cox told the publication.

“It’s hitting on so many hot topics. This company can’t be speaking out of both sides of its mouth, saying the youth movement is important for us and we’ve done all these wonderful things to support that and at the same time, we’re putting on a show that we’re not comfortable with.”

Even though all 10 episodes of the first season have been written and work started on the second, the network felt, “The combination of a high school show with these very dark moments didn’t feel right.”

Set in a modern-day Westerburg High School, the show follows Veronica Sawyer (Grace Victoria Cox) as she deals with the most popular (and mean) clique in the school, The Heathers, led by Heather Chandler (Melanie Field). Along with school shootings, the series also tackles the topic of teen suicide.

Actress Shannon Doherty, who appeared in the original movie as Heather Duke – along with Winona Ryder as Veronica and Christian Slater as J.D – was expected to cameo in the series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show is currently being shopped at other networks.

However, Heathers – The Musical hits London’s West End stage this month.
