Hudson, Willow…Nashville? Parents are naming their children after Instagram filters

We need to talk about Lux. It's an Instagram filter - and the newest trendy name for baby boys.

Millennials who don't want a traditional moniker for their children are looking to their smartphones for inspiration - and are increasingly naming their babies after Instagram filters, according to parenting site

The US website and its UK counterpart have released the most popular baby names of 2015 and along with a 75% jump in the number of lads named Lux, boys are also being called after the photo sharing app's Ludwig, Amaro, Reyes, Hudson and Kelvin filters.

Meanwhile Juno, Valencia and Willow are rising in popularity for girls, according to


Willow, which was introduced as an Insta filter in 2012, has been appearing in the UK's top 100 girls' names since 2011 and remains in the top 100 this year.

The boys' name Hudson - a favourite filter for landscape shots - began showing up in the US top 100 in 2010, taking the number 96 spot, and has crept up to 71 in the chart this year.

Another emerging trend is for regal names - including the majestic unisex moniker Royalty, which has seen a 90% increase in popularity this year. Duchess is also up 75% from 2014, while Reign has jumped 54% and Sultan is up 25%.

Baby Center took the data from more than 340,000 parents to compile the lists.

The top 10 names in both countries remain more traditional, with Olivia taking the top spot as the number one girls' name in the UK this year, coming in at number three in the US behind Sophia and Emma.

Muhammad is the most popular boys name in the UK, while Stateside, Jackson is this year's favourite.
