Here at Stylist, we’ve long nursed a soft spot for Gogglebox. The show’s producers have a knack for selecting ordinary people who somehow make perfect sense on TV, from elderly Liverpudlian couple Leon and June to the unutterably lovely Siddiqui family. There’s something deeply comforting about realising that – whoever we are and wherever we come from – we’re all prone to yelling at the TV occasionally, making Gogglebox perfect comfort watching for dark autumn evenings.
The show’s tenth series is now underway on Channel 4, with a special charity episode set to air next week. And while Gogglebox rarely fails to pull in viewers, we’re betting that this celebrity-filled episode will generate even more headlines than usual. That’s thanks largely to its star guest: Jeremy Corbyn.
Corbyn will be joined by a mystery celebrity on the sofa to dissect a range of TV programmes, although he will not be filmed at home in Islington.
A Labour source told the BBC that Corbyn was “really looking forward” to taking part in the show, and said that his episode being filmed this weekend.
“It’s a great programme for a great cause,” the source said.
Corbyn has previously said that his favourite TV series is Eastenders, but it’s not thought that he will get the chance to review the long-running BBC One soap on Gogglebox.
On social media, the news that the Labour leader would be appearing on the Channel 4 show received characteristically mixed reviews. Some Twitter users seemed sceptical (to put it politely):
Jeremy Corbyn going on Gogglebox just shows what a fame attention whore he is.— Kante West 🏴 (@KanteWest_) October 25, 2017
However, others reacted with the adulation that Corbyn often received on the general election campaign trail earlier this year.
You can tune into the celebrity special Gogglebox on Channel 4 at 9pm on 3 November.
