Watch out world, Jodie Comer is coming for you.
The actor has just finished filming on her first post-Killing Eve project and it’s a doozy. Come 2020, Comer will be starring alongside none other than Ryan Reynolds in Free Guy, an action thriller set in a video game world that is about to be shut down by its programmers.
Reynolds plays one of the game’s unwitting background players who becomes aware that his whole existence is part of the game. He tries to plead with the programmers to save his world, which leads us to Comer. The actor plays Molotov Girl, the game’s original architect who has had her creation taken away from her, and she’ll do just about anything to get control of it back.
Just about anything, you say? Sounds like the kind of character that Villanelle might enjoy having a martini with.
Speaking at New York Comic Con, Comer joined co-stars Reynolds, Taika Waititi and Joe Keery to introduce the film. “This genre is super exciting to me, it’s an absolute dream,” Comer said in a promotional video. In the short clip, Reynolds and Waititi said that they were excited to make a movie together, having long admired each other’s work.
Comer, however, corrects them. “Didn’t you guys do a movie together?” she asks the pair. They did: Green Lantern, a superhero movie in which Reynolds starred as the titular hero and Waititi played Tom Kalmaku, a mechanic who supports Green Lantern in his heroic antics. Mystery solved, thanks to Comer.
Here is everything you need to know about Free Guy:
What is the plot of Free Guy?
Free Guy is set inside a video game that is about to be shut down by its programmers. Guy (Reynolds), a bank teller character in the game who becomes conscious of his potential fate, tries to save his world with the help of Molotov Girl (Comer), the game’s original programmer, whose real name outside the video game world is Millie.
The movie filmed over the past few months in Boston, with Comer jetting back and forth between the US and the UK. “I am tired, but it’s self-inflicted,” Comer told the Guardian. “I can’t complain that I’m being overworked.”
Speaking at New York Comic Con, Comer added: “When we first meet Millie she’s so defeated by the world but she also is so overpowered in the game/ We create an avatar of ourselves based on how we wish to be perceived, so it was interesting to flip between those.”
Fans will be excited to know that there is a budding romance between Comer and Reynolds’ characters in the film. In a clip previewed to New York Comic Con audiences, Millie/Molotov Girl tells her best friend, played by Keery, that she had kissed guy in the video game, not understanding that he was a character who had gained sentience.
“He’s the first artificial intelligence!” Keery yells at Comer. We can’t wait to see how this Her-esque romance story between a real-life woman and a video game character unfolds in the film.
Who stars in Free Guy?
Reynolds and Comer lead the cast, which also includes a brace of gifted comedians including Lil Rel Howery, Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi and Stranger Things’ Joe Keery. Howery plays Reynolds’ best friend while Keery will take on the role of Comer’s character’s best friend outside of the video game in the real world.
Reynolds has spoken on Instagram about how proud he is of the film. “Holy shit, I love this movie. I want to flash-fry it and inject it straight into your eyeballs,” he wrote, which is Reynolds for “I think this film is pretty great”.
Speaking at New York Comic Con, Reynolds added: “I haven’t been this fully immersed and engaged in something since Deadpool, so this spoke to the moment in a huge way. We live in really weird times right now, you go to the news and it’s end of times but five seconds later, it’s what’s between Katie Couric and Tyga. I feel a kinship of feeling like a background character in the world, where you’re in an automatic loop and have no control over the world.”
Who is the director of Free Guy?
Shaun Levy is directing Free Guy. The filmmaker is known for perfecting the balance between action and comedy in his hit films, which have included the three Night at the Museum movies, Tina Fey’s Date Night and Cheaper by the Dozen.
More recently, though, Levy has been the main director on the first three seasons of Stranger Things alongside the show’s creators. It’s no wonder, then, that Levy has brought Joe Keery – who plays the sweetly heroic Steve Harrington on the Netflix show – onto Free Guy in a starring role.
Is there a trailer for Free Guy?
Not yet. We’ll keep you updated when it’s released.
What is the release date of Free Guy?
Free Guy will be in cinemas on 3 July in the US and the UK.
