YouTube beauty guru Lauren Luke has joined forces with Refuge to help women experiencing domestic violence speak out and get support.
Refuge’s new Don’t Cover It Up campaign sees the YouTube star appear in a make-up tutorial video entitled How to Look Your Best the Morning After. However, rather than her usual self, Lauren’s face is covered in bruises and cuts as she explains how to use make-up to cover up the injuries.
While Lauren’s injuries aren’t real, the video highlights that for 65% of women who hide the domestic violence they are experiencing, using make-up as a way of concealing abuse is an all too real scenario. By encouraging women to watch and share Lauren Luke’s video, Refuge hope to encourage abused women and teenagers to seek help instead of covering it up.
Speaking about her involvement in the Don’t Cover It Up campaign, Lauren said that she decided to do the video for Refuge to help increase awareness of the issue of domestic violence:
“Domestic violence is a huge issue and I really don’t think that it gets the exposure that it needs,” she explained. “A lot of women follow [me] on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter so I just wanted to get the point out there and let everyone know that there is somewhere you can go if you need support.” Certainly a point worth making.
If you are a woman experiencing domestic abuse – whether physical, emotional, psychological or financial – head to refuge.org.uk or call Freephone 0808 2000 247 for advice and support.
