Beloved sisters Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy are set to return to the big screen in a remake of Little Women.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the latest adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's 1868 book this week, saying that Sony is in talks with director Sarah Polley - who starred in Dawn of the Dead before directing critically-acclaimed films Take This Waltz, Away From Her and Stories We Tell - to work on the film.

Although there have been five big screen adaptations of the novel, this will be the first since the iconic 1994 classic starring Winona Ryder as Jo, Claire Danes as Beth, Kirsten Dunst as Amy, Susan Sarandon as mother or "Marmee" Mrs March, and Christian Bale as the rich next door neighbour Laurie.

Previous versions of Little Women have featured Katharine Hepburn (1933) and Elizabeth Taylor (1949).
