We’ve seen people propose with flash mobs, at football games and with billboards but this is the first time (we think) that anyone has ever proposed using the cover of a national magazine.

James Greig appeared on the front cover of The Observer Magazine on Sunday, holding a box containing a diamond ring and asking his girlfriend Katie to marry him.

They were on a Valentine’s Day trip to the Cotswolds when hotel staff delivered the magazine, along with breakfast and champagne at 9am.

The pair met in New York and had a long distance relationship for a year before moving in together in 2014. They had been interviewed already for what Katie thought was a feature on long-distance romance. “With him, I felt I could finally be myself,” admitted Katie, while James told her he loved her in a Brooklyn nightclub at 4am. On the flight home, to the embarrassment of the BA cabin crew: “I cried.”

So the big question is… what did she say? The Observer revealed Katie’s answer on Twitter.

James, who hadn’t slept all night, said at first Katie thought he had arranged for a single copy of the magazine to be printed with his proposal. When the truth emerged, she admitted it was “wonderful” and the pair celebrated with a romantic walk.
