Are you planning to blitz all your Christmas shopping today? You're not alone. Mega Monday lunch time will be the peak hour for online shoppers around the country
Today has been dubbed 'Mega Monday', the most hectic online shopping day of the year, with a predicted spending of £22 million an hour in the UK alone.
The rush is on for a number of reasons. Shoppers want to make sure that the presents are delivered in time for Christmas; the last pay day of the year; retailers launching their Christmas sales over the weekend; the snow has put many shoppers off hitting the high streets and many wily shoppers are making the most of the early sales, rather than waiting for the traditional January discounts to avoid the VAT increase in January from 17.5% to 20%. All of these reasons combined make internet shopping a very attractive option indeed.
The peak spending time is predicted to be during lunch hours and so the precise peak spending period will be at 12.58 and 23 seconds – don’t be surprised if sites crash. Kelkoo, a price comparison site, has calculated that consumers are likely to spend a massive £537 million online today.
