Since Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration, the world has seen dozens of women’s marches spring up around the world. But in London, one event has been calling for gender equality since long before the Orange One’s election: the annual #March4Women.
The brainchild of women-focused anti-poverty charity Care International, #March4Women is now in its seventh year. Last year’s event saw thousands of people, including Team Stylist, march through central London to demand gender equality, ending with a barnstorming rally in Trafalgar Square hosted by Sue Perkins.
This year, the #March4Women was an indoor event, taking place at Central Hall Westminster - a grand building formerly used by the suffragettes for rallies and fêtes. Sue Perkins played host once more, and inspirational figures including Helena Bonham Carter, Shola Mos-Shogbamimu, Helen Pankhurst and Lady Brenda Hale – the first woman President of the UK Supreme Court – joined her on stage.
Trailblazing gender equality advocates also spoke. Think FGM campaigner Leyla Hussein; Gina Martin, the activist who made upskirting illegal; Shaista Gohir, executive director of the Muslim Women’s Network; and Mexican labour rights activist Marcelina Bautista.
