Breaking up is never easy, and the slow dissolution of a relationship is rendered in heartbreaking detail in Noah Baumbach’s latest film Marriage Story, a divorce drama that’s already been hailed as a serious Oscar contender.

Judging from the title of Noah Baumbach’s latest Netflix film, Marriage Story, you might well assume that you’ll soon be adding another rom-com to your duvet day watchlist. Prepare for your expectations to be upended, then, because the new drama is actually a portrait of a divorce.

Yes, Marriage Story is not your average happily-ever-after. But it’s a film that stands bravely on the other side of the cinematic divide, and takes a look at love when it’s drawing to a close.

Starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver as a once-devoted couple whose relationship is crumbling even as they try and keep their family together, Marriage Story has already been hailed a serious contender in the Oscar race following its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival. And with Johansson and Driver tipped for Best Actor and Actress nominations when awards season rolls around, the film is definitely worthy of your attention. Here’s everything we know about the film so far.

What is the plot of Marriage Story?

Directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Noah Baumbach, Marriage Story tells the tale of Nicole and Charlie, a husband and wife who were once deeply in love, but have drifted apart over time.

Charlie is a Brooklyn-based theatre director who runs his own troupe, Exit Goat, and Nicole is the lead actress in the troupe. But when Nicole is offered a part in a TV drama in Los Angeles, the relationship starts to crumble. Nicole feels that her husband has taken her for granted and has lost her sense of identity in the marriage, while Charlie is bitter at Nicole’s career prospects in television.

When the pair begin divorce proceedings from the coastal capitals of New York City and LA, their attempts to keep things amicable quickly sour. Nicole and Charlie each hire a lawyer to navigate the split and fight for custody of their child, but as the film makes clear, no relationship can be neatly deconstructed.

Who is in the cast of Marriage Story?

There’s a stellar line-up in Marriage Story, and although the combination of actors looks slightly jarring on paper, by all accounts they work together brilliantly on screen.

Leading the cast are Scarlett Johannson (Avengers: Endgame, Lost in Translation, Her) and Adam Driver (Girls, Star Wars, BlackKkKlansman) as protagonists Nicole and Charlie.

Elsewhere, Laura Dern (Jurassic Park, Wild, Big Little Lies) and Ray Liotta (Goodfellas, Narc, Revolver) and Alan Alda (M*A*S*H, The Four Seasons, Crimes and Misdemeanours) take up superb supporting roles as the couple’s LA divorce lawyers.

Is there a trailer for Marriage Story?

Yes - in fact, Netflix have released two to coincide with the film’s debut at the Venice Film Festival. Each trailer is told from the perspective of the two protagonists, Charlie and Nicole, and tells their thoughts and feelings towards their partner.
