Donald Trump has reacted to comments made by Meghan Markle in the 2016 presidential election campaign - but does he realise he just gave her the ultimate praise?
We’re proud of being the kind of women that Donald Trump hates: strong, opinionated, ambitious.
In the past, he has labelled Madonna “disgusting”, Meryl Streep “overrated” and Hillary Clinton “nasty”. It’s no coincidence that these three women are hugely successful and outspoken feminists.
But any insult from the American President is surely a personal triumph?
The Duchess of Sussex will now know what it’s like to receive such high praise from Trump, as he has called her “nasty” for speaking out against him in the 2016 presidential election.
In an interview with The Sun ahead of his UK state visit (yes, that is happening next week – eugh), Trump was told about comments made by the Duchess.
Speaking on the Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore in 2016, Meghan Markle called Trump a misogynist and said she would leave the country if he won presidency.
“It’s really the moment that I go, we film Suits in Toronto and I might just stay in Canada,” she said. “I mean come on, if that’s reality we are talking about, come on, that is a game changer in terms of how we move in the world here.”
Markle continued: “I think it was in 2012, the Republican Party lost the female vote by 12 points. That’s a huge number and with a misogynistic as Trump is and so vocal about it, that’s a huge chunk of it.
“You’re not just voting for a woman if it’s Hillary. Yes you’re voting because she’s a woman, but certainly Trump has made it easy to see that you don’t really want that kind of world that he’s painting.”
Trump’s reaction to Markle’s words?
“I didn’t know that. What can I say? I didn’t know that she was nasty.”
He then went on to say that Markle will make a “very good American princes” and said that he thinks she will do “excellently”.
We’re sure the Duchess will be relieved to hear that…
Unfortunately, she won’t be meeting with Trump next week as she is currently on maternity leave with her baby son Archie. But her husband the Duke of Sussex - who is a proud feminist - will have to greet him as a royal duty.
Congratulations on your new label, Meghan. And please do keep on being nasty!
