When it comes to drama, television is very much the future. The cream of acting and directing talent have turned to the box as the best medium to express themselves, given they can tell a multi-layered story over several weeks, rather than in two hours. Cinema, as a result, has struggled to compete with the likes of The Wire, Sherlock and The Sopranos.
And that trend seems set to continue with Top Of The Lake, which not only has Oscar winner Jane Campion on board as co-writer and director, but also boasts a cast featuring Elizabeth Moss, Peter Mullan and Oscar winner Holly Hunter. Rather than being buried in the box, the cream of Hollywood is finding salvation there.
Top Of The Lake tells the tale of Tui Mitcham, a 12-year-old girl and daughter of a local drug lord. She is saved from the freezing waters of a lake in New Zealand and discovered to be pregnant. However, Tui won’t reveal who the father is, before disappearing.
Detective Robin Lake (Moss) investigates and begins an obsessive hunt for the girl and soon discovers that she’s not just looking for Tui, but also searching herself.
