It may only be a small tweak to Barbie's anatomy but it's a notable step for womankind.

The newest set of dolls have had their ankles adjusted so that Barbie is now able to wear flats. Hallelujah.

We can totally see her getting on board with Birks, Nikes and Slides this summer.

It's only taken 55 years to lower her standards, but we're thankful for the transformation at last.

In addition the new doll, from Mattel's Barbie Fashionistas line, will include Barbies of eight brand new different skin tones, 14 different facial shapes, 18 eye colours, 22 hair styles, and 23 hair colours for the very first time.

Barbie really is getting a diverse 21st century make over which seems totally appropriate given the many different guises she has taken on over the years. We've seen her without make up, taking on many famous faces including Kate Middleton, Cher and Lady Gaga and of course as an entrepreneur.

To mark the new doll  - shot by Laurie Simmons (that's Lena Dunham’s mum) - Mattel legend Barbie has spoken out about what it means to be a modern woman, during an in-depth interview with V Magazine. She said: “I’m so proud of what women are achieving today and remain committed to helping inspire girls and boys, sparking their imaginations and showing them that anything is possible.

“I’ve always encouraged girls to create roles for themselves. It’s often overlooked, but I did go to the moon before man landed there, and I was even a presidential candidate several years before Hillary Clinton."

So there you go..
