If you were one of the millions of people who became hooked on Making a Murderer at the end of 2015, you’re in for a treat.

Netflix announced this week that new episodes of the Emmy-nominated documentary series are currently in production – meaning that it won’t be too long before we’re able to delve back into the story of convicted murderer Steven Avery and co-defendant Brendan Dassey.

The new instalments of the critically lauded real-crime series will follow the post-conviction process, as Avery and Dassey’s investigative and legal teams fight to clear their clients’ names.

Netflix said that the new episodes will offer “exclusive access” to Avery’s new lawyer, Kathleen Zellner, and Dassey’s legal team, led by Laura Nirider and Steve Drizin – as well as “intimate access to the families and characters close to the case”.

“We are extremely grateful for the tremendous response to, and support of, the series,” said the series’ creators, Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos. “The viewers’ interest and attention has ensured that the story is not over, and we are fully committed to continuing to document events as they unfold.”

The first series of Making a Murderer was the result of a decade’s worth of work by Ricciardi and Demos, and documented the murder trial and subsequent conviction of Avery and Dassey in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, for the 2005 killing of 26-year-old photographer Teresa Halbach.

Over the course of 10 episodes, viewers were shocked, outraged, angered and fascinated in equal measure, as the show cast serious doubts over the decisions of the American criminal justice system. In April 2016, British Making a Murderer fans went so far as to protest outside the US embassy in London to call for Avery and Massey's release.

A release date for the new series is yet to be announced, but Ricciardi and Demos have also been busy elsewhere. Last month, it was reported that George Clooney will be producing their new dramatic television series for them, focusing on the pharmaceutical industry.
