From Paula the psychic octopus, to Larry the Downing Street ‘mouser’, there are plenty of animals out there with seriously cool jobs. And now a humble guinea pig has joined their ranks, after scoring a spot on the New Zealand Police Force.
Constable Elliot – who has been kitted out with his own teeny tiny uniform and hat – is undeniably an adorable addition to the team. However, he’s so much more than a pretty face: this little guinea pig is here to teach the masses about a very important topic – and one which is very close to his heart.
No, we’re not talking about proper hutch cleanliness (although we’ve no doubt that Elliot has more than a few opinions about that, too): this pocket-sized police officer has been busily penning social media posts about the importance of safe driving.
“Did you know that a piggie's top speed can be around 9km/hr? Not me,” writes Constable Elliot (because, on top of being a uniformed officer, this guinea pig has learned how to pen a decent Facebook post, too).
Elliot continues: “I have gone a bit overboard on the carbs lately and need to lighten up, so I go even slower. I am not too fast and that's the way I like it - slow is safe!
“Keep this in mind when you are driving near any schools tomorrow. Remember people, the kids are going to be out and about walking and biking, and crossing roads. Like me, they are small and unpredictable, so you have to watch out.”
Constable Elliot adds: “Keep an eye out for school patrols and please do your part in keeping our kids safe. Drive to the conditions, reduce your speed and stay alert.”
And then, because no health and safety warning would be complete without a nod to the power of our five-a-day, he says: “Oh, and eat your greens....always eat your greens.”
The post has been shared almost 2,000 times and generated 9,500 ‘likes’ from Elliot’s avid fanbase.
However, with some expressing concern for the piggie’s well-being, the police force stepped in to reassure social media users that Elliot isn’t a workaholic. In fact, quite the opposite…
“Elliot is a well-cared for family pet of one of our media team members,” they confirmed.
“According to his human ‘mum’ he’s pampered, and loves going on trips to explore new food supplies, which is what he was doing yesterday. He loves being patted and carried and can spend a while being cuddled on laps.”
We’re glad to hear that Elliot has got his work/life balance well and truly sussed.
