Carlos was desperate to find #Nicolefromlastnight. Instead, he stumbled across a brand-new squad…

Whether it’s You’ve Got Mail or Love Actually, it seems all good love stories involve a sprinkle of intrigue, a dash of missed connection, and a healthy dollop of borderline creepiness. And so it was for Carlos Zetina and Nicole.

As reported by Buzzfeed, Zetina met a woman from Holland named Nicole while at a bar near the University of Calgary. He gave her and her pal a lift home, and she gave him her phone number.

When he plugged those digits into his smartphone, though, Zetina quickly realised that he’d been given the wrong number. Rather than assume she’d done it on purpose (sometimes that happens, we’ve heard), Zetina decided to think outside the box and go big.

That’s right: he only went and decided to email all 246 Nicoles with University of Calgary emails.

“Hi, this is a mass email to all Nicoles,” began a hopeful Zetina, before going on to describe the Nicole he was looking for.

“If your name is Nicole and you’re from Holland and you think Nietzche is depressing, then call me,” he said

“If you don’t fit this description then ignore and if you are the one and just don’t want to talk to me that’s OK as well.”

The Nicoles (and Nicollettes and Nicolas and Nickys) who received his email were, to put it mildly, bemused. It wasn’t long before they’d formed a separate email chain and Facebook group – aptly called ‘Nicole From last Night’ – and arranged to meet up for drinks.

Naturally, the professors whom Zetina emailed (because, yes, he emailed literally every Nicola at the University of Calgary) decided to decline the invite.

However, they did make sure to join in the fun on social media.

In short, Zetina unwittingly founded a brand-new squad, but you’d be wrong if you thought that was the end of the story.

Oh yes: it turns out that the original Nicole had not fake-numbered Zetina on purpose. As it turns out, she was in Calgary on an exchange trip and hadn’t memorised her Canadian number properly. She didn’t even receive the mass email because she doesn’t have a university email.

Thankfully, though, the all-powerful group of Nicoles helped her to connect with Zetina – but only after making sure his extreme emailing wasn’t malicious and Nicole from Holland really did want to meet him.

All hail the power of female friendship.
