From accidentally flashing a colleague to struggling to work with the foxes on Fleabag, here is every time the writer and actor has shined on a talk show.
If you’re suffering from a Phoebe Waller-Bridge deficit, we sympathise.
Now that the second season of Fleabag has wrapped up, and her James Bond sequel still many months from appearing in cinemas, Waller-Bridge has disappeared from our screens. There are a few lucky people who will get to see her on the London stage when she reprises her Fleabag stage show for a new audience, but other than that Waller-Bridge is working hard off screen. And we miss her.
Don’t worry, though. Thanks to the exciting fact that Waller-Bridge is nominated for something like 700 Emmy Awards for Fleabag and Killing Eve – 20, actually, and one of the very few times that someone is nominated in both the Best Drama and Best Comedy categories – Waller-Bridge is doing the rounds on the US talk shows. Which means there are plenty of hilarious YouTube clips to pore over while we’re in our Waller-Bridge slump.
That time Phoebe Waller-Bridge told a dirty joke on Jimmy Fallon
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is famous for its silly games, but Waller-Bridge took it to the next level during a round of ‘Think Fast!’ on the late night show in August. The idea is simple: you have to say the first thing that comes into your mind when your partner asks you a question.
Waller-Bridge’s answers were hilariously unhinged – “How old are teenagers?” Fallon asked her, “Seven!” the writer replied – but the best moment of the game was when Fallon asked her why ‘it’ was so hard. Waller-Bridge’s response was so dirty that the comedian broken down in laughter and had to end the game then and there.
That time Phoebe Waller-Bridge told Jimmy Fallon about the CGI used on Fleabag
Did you know that there was CGI used on Fleabag? Because there was. Rehashing a story Waller-Bridge originally told on Elizabeth Day’s How To Fail podcast, Waller-Bridge explained that they needed to use CGI to render the infamous fox from the show’s final episode. They tried with real-life foxes but ‘twas not to be for one hilarious reason.
That time Phoebe Waller-Bridge revealed her most humiliating story on The Graham Norton Show
We don’t want to spoil the punch line of this yarn, which starts with Waller-Bridge telling a story about playing pranks on her castmates in the theatre and ends with her accidentally flashing Olivia Colman. Trust us, if you only watch one video from this story make it this one.
That time Phoebe Waller-Bridge told Stephen Colbert about every time she has fan-girled over a celebrity encounter.
Watching Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel canoodle at the Golden Globes, making Meryl Streep laugh – Waller-Bridge has some of the best stories about celebrity run-ins. The story about Streep starts off strong with the pair making what Waller-Bridge jokingly calls “a connection” on the set of The Iron Lady, but unfortunately the best friendship with the pair didn’t last beyond the project.
That time Phoebe Waller-Bridge dished to Seth Meyers how they make the sound effects on Fleabag
Ever wonder how they make sound effects on television and in plays? Because you may wish you had never asked the question when you hear the answer. Waller-Bridge told Seth Meyers that all the sound effects on Fleabag were made by either Waller-Bridge or one of her family and friends. Waller-Bridge’s mum is one of the many voices that appears in the show, as is a pretty ridiculous recording, by Waller-Bridge’s sister, of the show’s director softly slapping Waller-Bridge’s bottom.
That time Phoebe Waller-Bridge told Seth Meyers how she convinced Olivia Colman to appear in Fleabag
Bonus Seth Meyers content: on that same episode, Waller-Bridge gushed about her Fleabag co-star Olivia Colman. “How do you get Olivia Colman to star in your show?” Meyers asked. “You emotionally bribe her with your friendship,” Waller-Bridge replied. Genius.
