While capturing a timelapse of a storm rolling in over Sydney Harbour last week, photographer Sam Yeldham also happened to take his first ever wedding photograph.
A couple, who had just got married near Bradley’s Head, had wandered down to the harbour at the same time with their own wedding photographer, hoping to take some shots alongside the water at sunset.
After waiting for the rain to pass, the newlyweds finally ventured out on the pier to take advantage of a short 15 minute break in the weather.
Despite the wind whipping the bride’s dress into a frenzy and the storm threatening to return at any moment, their snapper Liv Style took some gorgeous shots.
Seeing an opportunity to capture something special himself, Yeldham, who was at the harbour with his girlfriend, also took a few photographs of the couple.
“The bride was wearing a pretty long, flowing gown and was trying to prevent it from getting wet, her husband was trying to help her and combat the epic wind that was throwing the dress around,” Yeldham tells BuzzFeed.
“It was kind of ridiculous how well-timed the shoot ended up being. The rain stopped just as the sun was hitting the bridge and was only clear for 15 minutes or so… the couple walked out over the platform and probably managed to get into one good pose before the wind and weather threatened to ruin the shoot.”
Unfortunately, the wedding party then left the harbour before Yeldham could swap any contact details.
But when he posted an image from that evening on his Instagram page, which has long been largely dedicated his timelapse shots of sunsets and landmarks in and around Sydney, the internet went wild.
As the image began to be picked up by media outlets around the globe, Yeldham was desperate to find out who his mystery couple were. And though he expected to embark upon a long process of detective work, Instagram helped him out rather speedily.
“I didn't expect to find the couple so quickly," he tells Mashable. "I thought I would be ringing around wedding venues and florists for a week but the Internet just worked so fast. It was quite amazing really.”
A friend of the couple had in fact seen Yeldham’s post, and tagged the couple, known as Jess and Chris, in the comments section.
Though away on their honeymoon in Hawaii, the pair got in touch with Yeldham just three days after his post went viral, to thank him for the incredible shot.
“It was very exciting to make contact; we did so over Instagram which is very fitting," says Yeldham.
“The couple were really happy with the photograph; they are currently on their honeymoon in Hawaii, so I think it was a pretty crazy/special thing to happen.”
Along with Yeldham's images, wedding photographer Liv Style managed to get these beautiful shots during the break in the storm too...
