The Duchess of Sussex faces criticism every day, and best friend Priyanka Chopra has NO time for it.
Since becoming a member of the royal family in 2018, Meghan Markle has been subjected to constant negative remarks in the press on a near-daily basis.
Just last month, the BBC sacked Danny Baker for sharing a racist tweet about Meghan’s newborn son Archie. And the sexist comparisons between Meghan and her sister-in-law Kate Middleton show no signs of stopping – literally just because they are two women who married into the same family.
Just last week, Meghan was also called “nasty” by Donald Trump (although we see that more of a compliment than an insult to be completely honest).
In a nutshell: the press is always ready to attack the Duchess, despite the fact that she has proven herself to be, time and time again, a staunch humanitarian and feminist.
She published a cookbook with women from the Grenfell Tower community in 2018, she delivered a speech on women’s suffrage during her Australian tour in the same year, and she recently offered her support to sex workers, too.
So, what’s with all the hate?
Long-time friend Priyanka Chopra has shared her views on what she thinks is the real reason the press keep targeting Meghan.
Speaking to The Sunday Times about such reports, Chopra said: “I’ve seen that, and it’s really unfortunate. But if there’s anyone who can handle it, it’s her.”
Asked if criticism of Meghan is down to her biracial heritage, Chopra replied: “For sure, 100%. Of course it has to do with racism, it’s an obvious reason. But the beauty of Meg is that she’s been herself through all of this. A lot of people got to know her after everything [once she started dating Harry], but I knew her before, and she’s the same chick.”
She then went on to praise the work her friend is doing in the face of negativity, adding: “Now that she’s got a real platform, she talks about the same things she always did. We spent hours speaking about the difference that influence and dialogue can make to the world before this whole thing happened. So what you see now is authentically her. She’s always been the girl wanting to move the needle.”
Even Chopra came under fire by a journalist for not attending Meghan’s baby shower last year.
During an appearance on America’s Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, she was asked if she didn’t attend the shower because they had “fallen out”. Chopra laughed it off, saying: “Oh my god, no, it’s not true.” She then swiftly moved on to the next question.
Chopra had previously explained the reality of maintaining long-distance friendships in an interview with the Press Trust of India, saying: “We’ve managed to keep in touch via email and text, and try to see each other whenever we’re both in the same town.”
It looks like Meghan can’t even have an overseas friendship without being scrutinised for it.
