Prue Leith accidentally ruined the finale of The Great British Bake Off, but will the gaffe affect her future on the Channel 4 show?
Everyone remembers where they were the day that Prue Leith unveiled Sophie Faldo as the winner of Bake Off 2017 a whopping 12 hours before the episode aired. This writer, for example, was sat at her desk as she pondered which delicious baked good to serve up alongside the finale (it’s not GBBO unless you’re eating a cherry bakewell or something, after all).
Naturally, fans were more than a little upset with the cooking expert for spoiling the final episode for them – with Paul Hollywood admitting that he himself was “horrified” when he learned what his colleague had done.
Joining Jo Brand for the post-finale edition of The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice, Hollywood smirked when Brand quipped: “Unfortunately, Prue can’t be with us because she’s too busy deleting her Twitter account.
“Paul, what did you make of that?”
“What can you say?” the baker laughed. “I was horrified. At the same time, she made a mistake.”
It was, yes, an honest mistake. And while many are annoyed about the gaffe, we doubt that anyone is as upset about the slip-up as Prue herself.
“The time difference is massive,” she said, when asked why she had fired off the tweet so early. “I thought that [the show aired] six hours ago.”
After a very humble apology, Prue added: “I’m in too much of a state to talk about it. I f***** up.”
Yet, despite the judge’s heartfelt and grovelling apology, some meanies suggested that Channel 4 should think about booting her from the show altogether.
So is her future on GBBO at risk?
The channel’s CEO, Alex Mahon, released a statement about the line-up for next year’s series, confirming that Prue has already been signed up, alongside fellow judge Paul Hollywood and new presenting duo, Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig.
Mahon said: “It’s testament to the phenomenal appeal of The Great British Bake Off that almost nine million people watched Sophie triumph as Channel 4’s first ever Bake Off winner – a fitting finale to the most watched series for young viewers on any channel this year.”
Impressive – and even more so, when you consider the fact that everyone knew the big reveal before they sat down in front of their televisions.
The Great British Bake Off will soon return with a celebrity special in aid of Stand Up to Cancer.
