We might get an extra bank holiday this year, and it's all thanks to the Queen

Ah, summer – we vaguely remember those sunny days of old.

At the moment, we’re busy tackling the sky’s unpredictable moods with a sweaty duffel coat and a broken umbrella, but warmer climes are just around the corner.  And we may just be getting an additional bank holiday, too, to ensure that we make the most of that  boost in vitamin D.

Thanks to the Queen celebrating her 65th jubilee – making her the longest-serving royal to date – one MP has proposed that we celebrate the landmark moment with a day off in June.

Proposed by Conservative MP Andrew Rosindell, the politician has said that it would be “a missed opportunity” to not have a national day of celebration – and we’re inclined to agree.

"It's almost certainly going to be a very long time before any monarch gets anywhere near 65 years,” said the Romford MP to the Press Association.

He continued: "It's the first time we've had any Sapphire Jubilee and if we let this go by, and don't have some sort of national day of celebration, it'll be a missed opportunity.

"It's also for the young people - I remember the Silver Jubilee [in 1977] as a kid and learnt how important these national occasions are.”

And cynics be damned – the request is even winning over the Prime Minister.

"I have personally spoken to Theresa May about the idea and she was certainly positive in her approach to this,” he said. "I hope the government will put some ideas to Her Majesty for her agreement and hopefully in June have a celebration."

Despite this, Queenie herself has said that she’s not keen on going all out for the event.

Discussing the milestone, the royal said the anniversary was "not one to which I have ever aspired".

She added: "Inevitably, a long life can pass by many milestones. My own is no exception."

Whether or not you intend to spend the day quaffing champagne in honour of the royal or sitting in front of the TV catching up on all that is good and holy on Netflix, we think that both the Queen and you deserve one extra day off.

We only get eight days of bank holiday a year, after all.
