You might have thought the world reached peak avocado in 2016, aka the year that even your Aunty Dilys got on board with the concept of smashed avocado on toast. But brunch lovers, rejoice: for you, as they say, ain’t seen nothing yet.

The Avocado Show, a restaurant dedicated entirely to the precious green fruit, is set to open in Amsterdam’s hip De Pijp district in February. The café bills itself as Europe’s first avocado bar, and will serve meals from breakfast through to late-night snacks.

Friends Jaimie van Heije, Julien Zaal and Ron Simpson are the masterminds behind the new venture, and they insist they won’t struggle to come up with an entire menu centred around the ultimate hipster super fruit.

“The possibilities are endless,” they tell Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad. Their only rule, they say, is that all of the dishes contain avocado “in one way or another”.

In reality, this will translate into a menu packed with everything from burgers served in avocado buns to avocado chocolate smoothies (see below for a recipe by Helmsley + Helmsley, if you fancy making your own at home).

So if you can’t get enough of the Instagrammable green stuff, you know where to book for your next European mini-break. And if you’re after a leftfield career change, The Avocado Show is looking for a manager. Just saying…

Helmsley + Helmsley’s avocado chocolate shake recipe (via BBC Food)

  • 1 small peeled ripe banana, chopped, frozen
  • 3 tbsp cacao powder
  • 2 tsp coconut oil
  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1-2 tbsp honey, preferably raw honey, to taste
  • Tiny pinch salt

  1. Blend all of the ingredients and 750ml/1 pint 6 fl oz cold water together in a food processor until smooth. Add more water to loosen, if necessary.
  2. To serve, pour into small glasses.
