Autumn 2018: the best seasonal foodie events around the UK

From farmers’ markets to pickling workshops, these are the best food and drink events of the season.

Food, glorious food: we’ll happily tuck into the stuff in any season, but there’s something about the warm glow of pumpkin soup and the deep-red richness of cherry pie that has us exceptionally excited to taste our autumnal favourites once September rolls in. 

And what better way to taste them than by taking yourself on a foodie outing?

From pickling workshops to pudding tastings, there’s loads of lovely autumnal events going on over the next few months. Here, we’ve hand-picked some of our favourites, from Wales to London, and we’ll keep updating as the months go on. Bon apetit!

Artisan Market at Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire 

There’s surely nowhere a foodie is more at home than at an artisan food marke, and the market at Waddeston Manor in Buckinghamshire is famed for being one of the best in the UK.

Offering the very best in quality, fresh, seasonal produce, the market also aims to support local, small-scale, independent food producers (as if you needed an extra reason to attend). Interested> It takes place on the second Saturday of each month and sells vegetables, meats, fish, dairy and baked goods. Remember to bring cash, though, as there isn’t a machine on site.

Pickling and preserving masterclass with Skye Gyngell at the Tate Britain London 

Renowned chef and owner of Spring restaurant in Somerset House, Skye Gyngell, is teaming up with Tate Britain to put on a pickling and preserving masterclass in the museum’s community gardens, followed by a three-course feast in the Rex Whistler Restaurant. 

Taking place on the 8 September, to celebrate the gallery’s community garden project: A Common Ground, Gyngell will begin the day by leading guests through a workshop out in the garden. Using produce grown on-site, attendees will learn the art of all things pickled and fermented, and can even bring their own home-grown vegetables in to use, too. From there, guests will be lead to a special dinner cooked by Gyngell, served at communal tables in the Rex Whistler Restaurant with a welcome drink at the botanical bar in the garden.

In keeping with the autumnal theme, the menu is made from seasonal produce from the Tate Britain community garden and will be matched with wines from Tate’s award-winning cellar.

Wild Food Foraging at Wenlock Edge, Shropshire 

Explore the natural beauty of Wenlock Edge in Shropshire on a guided foraging walk, where you and your friends can roam the countryside and pick tasty treats along the way. The leader of the walk will advise how to identify different edible and poisonous species, before you head back to the manor house to taste a variety of wild findings.

Fermenting and pickling workshop at The Picklery, London 

The Picklery is a quirky fermenting kitchen and wine bar in Dalston, East London, which puts on foodie workshops each month. On the 17 September, the restaurant’s chefs will be teaching a two-hour pickling and fermenting workshop that teaches guests what to do and what to look for when fermenting at home. 

In a small group you’ll taste kimchi’s, krauts and pickles at their different stages and you’ll gain an understanding of how to use fermented foods in your cooking. You’ll also make a kimchi that you’ll get to take away with you to ferment at home. After the class the restaurant will stay open for food and wine, meaning you can reward yourself with a hearty meal and a glass of plonk after all your hard work.

Autumn Puddings at The Edgecumbe tea room, Cornwall

Pudding is such a lovely word, isn’t it? Almost onomatopoeiac, the soft thud of the d seems to reflect the stodgy nature of the best desserts, from treacle to bread and butter to sticky toffee. And if there was ever a time of year suited to puddings, it’s autumn – a fact which the historic Edgcumbe tea-room is all too aware of, so much so that it is hosting an event dedicated to the stuff!

Situated on the banks of the river Tamar on Cotehele Quay in Cornwall, the tea-room is a gorgeous place to watch the green leaves turn gold. The evening feast will begin with a warming bowl of soup, before the menu turns to four homemade desserts created from the best of the season’s ingredients.
