While there are any number of shiny new bars competing for our custom, with sparkly cocktails drawing us in like mixology-loving moths to a basil-infused, candy-floss-topped, smoke-in-your-face, drink-through-a-conch flame (atop a retro enamel camping mug, natch), sometimes we yearn for the classics.

Well, 2017’s very best bar in the world has been announced, and it’s a Martini glass of old-school glamour right here in the UK.

The American Bar in London hotel The Savoy has topped the ninth annual World’s 50 Best Bars awards, beating locations in New York, Shanghai and Paris with its rich history and precisely executed cocktails.

The elegant bar – a mere 128 years old – is world-renowned, having spawned the The Savoy Cocktail Book and hosted any number of big names from the worlds of theatre, film, TV and politics over the decades, as well as legendary bartenders Ada Coleman, Harry Craddock and Peter Dorelli.
