How to make red wine hot chocolate, aka the ultimate winter drink

We like chocolate, and we like wine, so when we stumbled upon a recipe for red wine hot chocolate we knew we were on to a winner.

Described by its creator as RICH - in capital letters - this ultimate winter warmer is not one for the faint hearted.

Created by Houston-based blogger immaEATthat, red wine hot chocolate is concocted using a brilliantly simple recipe, and requires only three ingredients: dark chocolate, milk and red wine (she recommends a Cabernet Sauvignon).

To make the drink at home, immaEATthat, real name Kylie Michell, suggests melting a third of a cup of dark chocolate chips into one and a half cups of milk to produce basic hot chocolate. Give this a good stir, then pour in a cup of the red wine, and keep stirring until fully absorbed.

And that's it - an easy recipe for a deliciously spiked cup of hot chocolate.

Predictably, Instagram has gone crazy for the drink, with bloggers producing their own picture-ready variations (think melting marshmallows and jaunty cinnamon sticks).
