Life-like cake designs at Californian bakery of dreams

Published

Here at Stylist HQ, we're always in awe of truly incredible baking. While some of us may slave away at the weekend to produce a lumpy tray of brownies, our culinary efforts are a thousand icing pipettes away from anything that truly resembles a great cake.

So we can't take our eyes off these incredible designs from Californian-based bakery Studio Cake.

Owner Bethann Goldberg - in her enviable position as cake designer and decorator - conjures up all manner of fabulous baked concoctions, the more far-fetched the better.

Her team's sculptured creations encompass "cakes that look like anything but! If you can dream it, we can create it in cake!"

And they certainly follow through on this promise, cooking up everything from a mud-flecked jeep to a towering giant of a burger complete with lettuce, crisps and onion rings.

A fish in a bucket, pink cowboy boots, a yellow digger and a pair of incredibly realistic Converse trainers also rate among the bakery's stunning gourmet efforts.

"Studio Cake is the combination of everything BethAnn loves in life...," a statement reads on Studio Cake's website. "Not formally trained in pastry, she has a slightly offbeat, non conventional, learn as you go mentality... and as a person who is quick to dream, laugh and do, jumping in head first with a large grin is everyday for her."

Goldberg certainly has an interesting past, having worked as a ceramic sculptor and a NASA engineer before turning her hand to cake designing and baking. The mum-of-two studied at top US university Stanford.

She's supported by a team of five designers and decorators at the studio.

Ordering a treat at Studio Cake is a custom-made process, promising a "unique collaboration between the customer and designer." The team need at least a week to work on creations, which can cost anything between $45 to upwards of $1000.

The flavours alone sound highly tempting. Vanilla Bean Scream, anyone? Or how about Chocolate Decadence with chocolate swiss meringue buttercream and fudge frosting? We're sold.
