The idea of a Marmite or a Pot Noodle Easter egg make us feel a little odd – but both flavours are becoming a reality this year.
The eggs are being launched this February by food giant Unilever, which argues they will ‘broaden the appeal of Easter’.
The chocolate egg carries hints of Marmite and is promoted under the slogan ‘love it or hate it’. And news of a Pot Noodle Easter egg is bound to delight chocolate loving students up and down the country.
The idea of mixing the savoury and salty taste of Marmite with the sweetness of chocolate isn’t a new one. We’ve been fans of chilli chocolate for a while and have been known to add a chunk or two of our choccie bar to a stew or casserole, but these offerings are certainly still a little unusual.
Their famous advertising slogan is that people will love or hate it but Marmite - a staple of the British diet since it was first produced in Burton-on-Trent, Staffs, in 1902 - is the nation’s second best-selling spread behind Rowse honey.
So perhaps the Marmite flavoured Easter Egg will fly off the shelves.. The spread, whose celebrity fans include the Rolling Stones and Dido, lost its position as Britain’s top selling spread in 2013 when sales were overtaken by Rowse.
The Marmite egg will be launched in a shell egg format, and Pot Noodle will come with a mug, according to reports.
Kimm & Miller has been selling a Marmite flavoured milk chocolate bar for five years with users on Amazon saying it is ‘surprisingly nice’ and giving it a rating it 4.2 out of five, however some complained that the Marmite taste was not powerful enough so perhaps this new Easter egg will hit the spot.
The two eggs go on sale in February, will each cost £5.
