It may be too early to put up our Christmas trees (seriously guys, it’s only just turned November), but the festivities have well and truly kicked off at M&S…
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at Marks & Spencer: Colin the Caterpillar has been given the yuletide makeover of our dreams, Percy Pig is wearing a fetching Santa hat and, yes, the 2017 Christmas sandwich menu has finally been unleashed upon the world.
M&S Sandwich Product Developer Helen Brennan says: “Our customers look forward to the launch of our Christmas sandwiches all year and see it as the start of the festive season.
“Everyone thinks it’s the launch of the Christmas ads that get the nation excited but really it’s the first bite of our Turkey Feast!”
And, yes, the traditional Turkey Feast (£3.50) is back with thick slices of turkey breast on soft malted brown bread, finished with a dollop of cranberry sauce, herby stuffing, mayonnaise and crispy bacon. But, while that sounds pretty spectacular, they’ve opened up their menu to ensure that everybody gets a festive treat.
Say hello to their brand-new VEGAN Christmas wrap:
Priced at a purse-friendly £2.80, this red pepper wrap is filled to the brim with the most festive of nuts – otherwise known as the chestnut. It’s been paired with a delicious selection of mixed grains, and finished off with a very moreish grape and cranberry chutney, to ensure it tastes like Christmas all the way through.
Vegetarians, meanwhile, might fancy tucking into the Brie & Grape sarnie (£3.50). And, for pescetarians, the sandwich aisle is well and truly their oyster: think Prawn & Salmon Cocktail (£3.50) and the Lobster & Prawn Thermidor Brioche Roll (£3.50), to name just two options.
Of course, carnivores everywhere have plenty to choose from. There’s the Turkey & Pigs in Blankets sandwich (£3), which nestles sausages, bacon and turkey between two slices of soft sage and onion bread. Then there’s the Turkey Wrap (£3), which adds a fun twist to the festive classic with cranberry sauce and Brussels sprout slaw, the Ham Hock & Golden Beetroot Piccalilli sandwich (£3.50), the Turkey, Bacon & Cranberry Sausage Roll (£2.50) and the Crackling Crisps (£2).
And, as Brennan points out, that’s not all. “This year our Mustard Crusted Beef Roll is sure to be a favourite,” she says, before adding that it “comes complete with a pot of crunchy Yorkshire pudding scraps!”
Then, to wash the whole lot down, there’s the Christmas Pudding Smoothie (£1.50) – which combines all the festive warmth and spice of the classic figgy pudding for an incredibly decadent afternoon drink.
All in all, the M&S festive collection contains an impressive 21 products this year – which is, we’re sure you’ll agree, an impressive haul.
And, best of all, those festive nibbles go to a very good cause indeed: for every sandwich sold M&S donate 5% of the profits to homeless charity Shelter - so you can do your bit for charity and enjoy a festive treat at the same time.
Now, if you’ll excuse us, we’re off to ready our sleighs: we’ll see you in the sandwich aisle, yeah?
