‘Unicorn’ rainbow toasties: introducing the multicoloured grilled cheese sandwich of your Instagram dreams

Is it a sign we're reaching peak #instafood when even the delicious wonder that is cheese must be tarted up for the camera?

The latest food to pass the filter test and become a fully fledged viral Instagram sensation is the rainbow toastie – a stringy, multicoloured invention by the Kala Toast café in Hong Kong.

Eminently photogenic, the colourful grilled cheese sandwich has been dubbed the ‘unicorn toastie’ by some, and to be fair, the chef behind it, Jack Tam, doesn't seem to have created it purely for Instagram likes, telling Glamour magazine that he wanted to encourage his children's new-found love of cheese after a holiday to Europe.

Four types of cheese (mozzarella, Cheddar, Emmental and Gruyère) make up the sandwich and the shades represent flavours: lavender, basil and tomato.

It costs 42HKD (£3.75) and while it looks amazing on social media, one customer was a little underwhelmed by the subtle flavours and described it as “rather average” overall.

However, the café addressed this on Instagram, writing that the sandwiches were made “mild” on purpose given the strong nature of the flavours, but that customers could ask for any flavour “on its own to really tickle your tastebuds.”

It's official: the rainbow toastie is a thing. With rainbow bagels already on the market, surely we're not far off three rainbow meals a day at this point?
