The new “aromafork” that adds flavour to your food

The next time you reach for a little basil or mint to spice up your meal, you can save yourself the trouble.

A revolutionary new gadget allows you to add in tastes to what you're eating via the fork that you use. The "Aromafork" emits different smells which mix with the taste of the food to create a whole new flavour.

Unveiled by a food gadget company in Montreal, the device lets you choose one "taste" from a palette of aromas and upload it via a liquid capsule beneath the fork's handle. The liquid then soaks through a small piece of blotting paper and is gradually released throughout the course of a meal.

There are 21 different varieties of odour to choose from, including chocolate, coffee, vanilla, banana, lychee, passionfruit, strawberry, basil, cilantro, and mint.

Almond, coconut, peanut, cinnamon, ginger, jalapeno, wasabi, butter, olive oil, smoke, and truffle are also on the shortlist.

Diners can choose a bespoke flavour according to what they're eating; matching tuna with ginger, for example, or adding mint to a seabass dish.

Or adventurous gourmands might want to mix things up a bit by giving a twist of vanilla to pizza, or adding in lychee to a pasta main.

A pack of four Aromaforks with a full set of "tastes" and 50 diffusing papers costs £36.

"The initial idea was to reinvent the traditional fork into an improved utensil that would trick people’s mind by liberating an intense flow of aromas," said Jonathan Coutu, president of the Canadian inventors' firm Molecule-R Flavors.

He added that it was "the perfect educational tool to learn how to better appreciate food."

Smell plays an important role in how we discern more subtle tastes - in fact, aroma is responsible for 95% of the taste of food.
