Step away from the sherry – the post-Christmas dinner drink to pour in 2015 is sauternes. Stylist’s wine expert shares her top picks
Once considered the height of naff taste, sweet wine is staging a comeback – with one variety in particular proving ideal for quaffing this Christmas, post-sprouts.
“Sauternes is going through a retro-cool renaissance at the moment,” agrees Stylist’s wine expert Jane Parkinson.
“A French dessert wine made from one or several white grapes – sauvignon blanc, semillon and muscadelle – it is produced thanks to a (good) vine disease called noble rot, which dehydrates the grapes. This gives them a very high sugar concentration so the wine ends up being very sweet.”
And the best food to pair it with? “Hands down, my favourite food match for sauternes is blue cheese,” she says.

Domaine de Carbonnieu Sauternes 2012

Jane says: “Unctuous and smooth, this candied peel-flavoured variety is like liquid mango and pineapple with a grapefruit bite at the end.”
Stylist says: “Not too heavy or strong. Ideal for a post-dinner treat instead of Quality Street.”

Jane says: “Château Suduiraut is as classic as French châteaux get. This has the sticky taste of apricots, honey and caramel.”
