It’s official: Reese Witherspoon and Octavia Spencer are confirmed to star in a new TV drama inspired by the world’s obsession with Serial and other true-crime podcasts.

Based on Kathleen Barber’s hit novel of the same name, Are You Sleeping? promises to be an inventive and twisty psychological thriller – with a difference.

Partly inspired by the popularity of true crime podcasts such as Serial and My Favourite Murder, it tells the story of a woman named Josie, who has spent the last ten years trying to escape her family’s reputation after her father’s violent murder. Now, at long last, she’s managed it: Josie’s living a life of domestic bliss with her partner – who has no idea about her troubled past.

When an investigative reporter sets off a media firestorm with a mega-hit podcast that reopens the long-closed case of her father’s murder, Josie’s world quickly begins to unravel. And, before too long, it becomes horribly apparent that the only thing more dangerous than a lie… is the truth.

According to Deadline, Sarah Koenig – host, creator and producer of Serial – is on board to consult on the series. It is hoped that her involvement will provide “a unique glimpse into America’s obsession with true-crime podcasts and challenge its viewers to consider the consequences when the pursuit of justice is placed on a public stage.”

It remains unclear which roles Witherspoon and Spencer will take on: however, with so many critically-acclaimed performances under each of their belts, we’ve no doubt that they’re going to make this show utterly unmissable regardless.
